This year's program was a very special one for the Turn 2 Foundation. From July 8-July 11, 2009, Turn 2 hosted its Tenth Annual Turn 2 Foundation New York City Baseball Clinic! For the past decade, Turn 2 has made baseball clinics available to New York City's youth and has served thousands of participants across all five boroughs of New York City.

As in years past, Turn 2 partnered with the New York City Parks and Recreation Department who continue to help make each baseball clinic a success. The clinic took place at Chelsea Park and Chelsea Recreation Center in Manhattan where over 100 children -- representing all five boroughs -- attended the free, four-day event. Boys and girls ages 8-13 learned a number of baseball fundamentals and skills including; throwing, hitting, running, catching, and fielding techniques taught by outstanding coaches. Each skill was gradually built upon and reinforced over the course of the clinic. On the final day, the children were able to show off their newly honed abilities in a set of friendly skills contest stations.

In addition to learning baseball skills, the children were also exposed to essential life lessons. The life lessons were taken from Derek Jeter's autobiography, The Life You Imagine, which focuses on guiding today's youth toward positive, healthy choices and behavior. Each chapter of the book is dedicated to one of Derek's lessons such as Finding the Right Role Models and Don't Be Afraid to Fail. In this year's clinic, the children were able to define and discuss some of Derek's other lessons which include; Set Your Goals High, Have a Strong Supporting Cast, Be Serious -- But Have Fun, and Think Before You Act. Each child was also given a copy of Derek's All-Star Manual: 10 Life Lessons workbook and a baseball skills handout with a copy of Derek's "10 Life Lessons" poster.

One of this year's biggest highlights was a visit from special guest Bucky Dent, former New York Yankees Shortstop and 1978 World Series MVP. While speaking to the clinic participants, Bucky shared his experiences as a professional athlete and allowed the children to ask numerous questions about his life and career. He also reiterated the importance of being a team player and displaying good sportsmanship qualities; a vital part of the game. Following his presentation to the group, Bucky joined a number of the stations for some one-on-one instruction.

At the conclusion of the clinic, Turn 2 hosted an awards ceremony and banquet to reward the participants for their accomplishments. Families and friends joined the children as each one was honored with a certificate of completion and a gift bag from Turn 2 and its dedicated sponsors.

The Turn 2 Foundation would like to thank each partner, sponsor, coach, and child who has worked hard to make the baseball clinic so successful over the past 10 years. Turn 2 is looking forward to kicking off the next decade of baseball with the 2010 Turn 2 Foundation New York City Baseball Clinic next summer!
