Apply to Become a Jeter's Leader

Jeter's Leaders applications are due on or before Friday, April 1, 2016, at 5 p.m. ET.

Admission to the Jeter's Leaders program is open to all students throughout the five boroughs of New York City, and the West Michigan area. The goal is to recruit 8-10 new students (rising freshmen) annually. Recruitment will be completed by the Turn 2 Foundation staff, director, program coordinator, and current Jeter's Leaders. The recruitment process begins in February of the current program year. Interested students must be completing the eighth grade at the time of applying to the program.

Young people entering the Jeter's Leaders program are at a stage in their lives where self-awareness, self-discovery and self-development will be unparalleled compared to any other time in their lives. Therefore, the ideal young person applying for the program should possess, or have the potential to develop, the following qualities:

  • Interest or desire to participate in the program;
  • Commitment to carry out the Jeter's Leaders 10 Pillars of Leadership;
  • Desire to be a positive role model;
  • Enthusiasm and concern for others;
  • Interest in working with youth;
  • Ability to function in a group setting and contribute to team spirit;
  • Ability to attend Jeter's Leaders activities and events locally and nationally;
  • Work well with authoritative figures and handle taking direction from others;
  • Leadership skills or potential to develop leadership skills;
  • No major disciplinary problems;
  • Ability to communicates and work well with others.

Target population:

In an effort to ensure that they receive the necessary experiences and training to serve as ambassadors for Derek Jeter, and to ensure that they successfully finish high school and attend college, the program identifies youth who succeed academically, and possess leadership characteristics.


  • Currently in the eighth grade;
  • Live drug and alcohol free;
  • Maintain a GPA of 3.0 (B) or better;
  • Be involved in a community service or extracurricular activity in your school or neighborhood;
  • Be a resident of the New York metropolitan or West Michigan area.


  • Completed application form;
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation from a teacher, coach, program director, community leader, etc.
  • A copy of the most recent school report card or transcript;
  • A 300-word typed essay.

Since its launch in 1996, the Turn 2 Foundation has awarded more than $23 million to create and support signature programs that motivate young people to turn away from drugs and alcohol and "Turn 2" healthy lifestyles. Learn more »
