Derek Jeter Q&A: June 24, 2009

Hey, Derek! I have one quick question for you. What was it like playing in the cathedral, Yankee Stadium? Thank you for your time! Your fan, Joey R. Munster, IN

Derek: Until now, it's the only home stadium I've ever known, but it was an amazing experience. I was privileged to get to play there and I'm equally lucky to play in our new home across the street.

How often do you get a new mitt? Ben R., Meridian, Idaho

Derek: I get two gloves per year, and I use one during batting practice and one in the game.

Mr. Jeter, thank you for being such a positive role model for me to follow. I was just cut from the freshman baseball team at Bellarmine College Prep and it has been hard to deal with the situation. Do you have any ideas how to fight through this? Thanks for your time. Seth F., Santa Clara, Calif.

Derek: First of all, you have to keep a positive attitude about it. Baseball is a mental game, so you really need to keep yourself focused and in the right mind set. After that, I'd say practice, practice, practice and get back in there again next year.

Derek, do you plan on getting married? Deanna U., Nashville, Tenn.

Derek: Yes, I definitely hope to get married someday.

Dearest Derek, I understand you are busy, and I do not want to take up too much of your time. I would like to ask if you could say an inspirational word to my son, Logon. I am having a hard time getting him to do his schoolwork and thought maybe you could send him a message. He is quite a fan of yours and the Yankees. Thank You! Hatty S., Martin, S.D.

Derek: Logon, your education is the key to a successful future, so you've got to stay focused on your homework. My parents allowed me to play baseball only if I did well in school, so I was determined to maintain good grades throughout high school.

Who was your favorite player growing up? Travis S., Florissant, Mo.

Derek: Dave Winfield was my favorite player.

What type of glove do u use? Logan B., Louisville, Ky.

Derek: I use a Rawlings glove.

I just wanted to know if you are no longer part of Team Jordan. If not, was last year the last Jumpman DJ we will see? Juan R., Guynabo, P.R.

Derek: Yes, I am a member of team Jordan, and my latest signature shoe, the Jordan Jeter Captain, is in stores now.

Do you think baseball is a more mental or physical game? James V., Adah, Pa.

Derek: It's definitely more of a mental game.

Hi, I was wondering if you knew "jeter" means "to throw" in French. Brandon B., Melbourne

Derek: Actually, yes, I did know that -- it's a great coincidence.

Dear Derek, what was the greatest play you have ever made in your career? Derek T., Cottage Grove, Minn.

Derek: I don't think I can single out one play, but I will say that my favorite moment is anytime we're the team on the field making the winning out in the last play of the season.

Hey, Derek! I am a diehard Jeter fan. What made you want to start your own charity? Shayne O., Oakland, N.J.

Derek: I was a big Dave Winfield fan when I was growing up, and he was the first athlete to start his own foundation. I was inspired by him and knew that if I made it to the big leagues, I wanted to start my own foundation to give back as well.
